In ricordo di Paola Manduca

Oggi 28 marzo 2026 è il primo anniversario della scomparsa di Paola Manduca che in molti avete conosciuto, nata e cresciuta a Napoli, ha vissuto a lungo tra Genova, Napoli e Gaza.
Biologa e genetista, docente all’università di Genova, ha dedicato gran parte della sua vita alla causa palestinese ed è stata e continua ad essere figura di riferimento nel campo della ricerca sugli effetti delle armi di nuova generazione nei conflitti contemporanei.

Fondatrice e presidente dell’associazione NWRG (New Weapons Research Group) ODV, ha analizzato l’impatto delle armi non convenzionali nei conflitti in Libano, Iraq e soprattutto nella Striscia di Gaza. Le sue ricerche hanno denunciato le conseguenze devastanti delle guerre sulla salute delle popolazioni civili, in particolare sulla salute riproduttiva.
Ma non era solo il capitale scientifico e professionale che aveva prodotto per le vittime della guerra di Gaza, ma tutto il suo cuore e la sua anima, e la sua vita. Viveva e respirava Gaza.
E’ stata impegnata in molte iniziative per la nostra amata Palestina come: Sanitari per Gaza, RUP ISDE, e ha collaborato, dedicando tutta sé stessa intrecciando numerosissime relazioni a livello nazionale ed internazionale. Ha voluto anche che la nostra associazione aderisse ad ECCP (European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine) per favorire la nascita di un fronte unico tra le associazioni che più si battono, a livello europeo, per la tutela dei diritti del popolo palestinese, ed ha apportato un contributo fondamentale al lavoro di questo Coordinamento.

Con questa e mail vogliamo ricordarla e comunicare che la nostra associazione è ancora viva e attiva. NWR G negli anni ha raccolto fondi che hanno permesso di procurare alle strutture sanitarie pubbliche di Gaza, in particolare di maternità e pediatriche, medicine salvavita e apparecchiature medicali, ed anche permettere a medici di Gaza di partecipare a stage di aggiornamento in Italia. Dopo l’inizio dell’offensiva iniziata a ottobre 2023, che ha portato alla totale distruzione della Striscia ed in particolare del suo sistema sanitario, grazie all’impegno principale di Paola abbiamo avviato il progetto MilkyWay (Via Lattea), volto a fornire latte in polvere per neonati, anche pretermine, alle Unità di terapia intensiva neonatale ancora operanti e ai centri di distribuzione di generi di necessità gestiti dall’ONU. Pur non avendo tutte le competenze scientifiche di Paola cerchiamo di portare avanti le iniziative assistenziali cui lei teneva particolarmente, anche per la sua conoscenza diretta della drammatica situazione in cui si trovava la Striscia anche prima del 7 ottobre e grazie agli stretti rapporti da lei instaurati con il ministero della salute e con i principali ospedali di Gaza.

Attraverso questi contatti, che abbiamo mantenuto, e l’aiuto di partners, in primo luogo la Chiesa Valdese, ma anche molti donatori, abbiamo proseguito, faticosamente, a inviare scorte di latte in polvere per neonati e infanti. La carenza di farmaci e di latte specifico per i neonati sia a termine che pretermine ha causato gravi danni e molti decessi fra i bimbi nati a Gaza durante questi ultimi anni. Non siamo ancora riusciti a riprendere il lavoro scientifico di Paola e stiamo cercando partner in grado di aiutarci a proseguire gli studi e le pubblicazioni.


Paola non è più con noi fisicamente. Ma la sua eredità umanitaria e scientifica vive per sempre. Concreti: qui trovate i risultati aggiornati dell’iniziativa Milky Way, che continuiamo a portare avanti e che lei aveva lanciato.

Today, March 28, 2026, marks the first anniversary of the passing of Paola Manduca, whom many of you knew. Born and raised in Naples, she lived for many years between Genoa, Naples, and Gaza.
A biologist and geneticist, and a professor at the University of Genoa, she dedicated much of her life to the Palestinian cause and has been and continues to be a leading figure in research on the effects of next-generation weapons in contemporary conflicts.
Founder and president of the NWRG (New Weapons Research Group) ODV association, she analyzed the impact of unconventional weapons in conflicts in Lebanon, Iraq, and especially in the Gaza Strip. Her research exposed the devastating consequences of wars on the health of civilian populations, particularly reproductive health.
But it wasn’t just the scientific and professional capital she generated for the victims of the Gaza war, but her entire heart, soul, and life. She lived and breathed Gaza.
She was involved in many initiatives for our beloved Palestine, such as Sanitari per Gaza, RUP, ISDE, and collaborated, dedicating herself entirely to building numerous relationships at the national and international levels. She also encouraged our association to join ECCP (European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine) to foster a united front among the associations that fight most, at the European level, for the protection of the rights of the Palestinian people, and she made a fundamental contribution to the work of this Coordination.

With this email, we wish to remember her and communicate that our association is still alive and active. Over the years, NWR G has raised funds that have enabled the provision of life-saving medicines and medical equipment to public healthcare facilities in Gaza, particularly maternity and pediatric wards, and also enabled Gazan doctors to participate in refresher training in Italy. 
After the offensive began in October 2023, which led to the total destruction of the Gaza Strip and its healthcare system in particular, thanks to Paola’s unwavering commitment, we launched the MilkyWay project, aimed at providing infant formula, including preterm infants, to the still-operating neonatal intensive care units and UN-run distribution centers for essential goods. 
Although we do not have all of Paola’s scientific expertise, we are trying to continue the assistance initiatives that were so important to her, thanks in part to her firsthand knowledge of the dramatic situation in the Gaza Strip even before October 7th and the close relationships she established with the Ministry of Health and the main hospitals in Gaza.

Through these contacts, which we have maintained, and the help of partners, primarily the Waldensian Church, but also many donors, we have continued, with great effort, to send supplies of formula for newborns and infants. The shortage of medications and formula specifically for both full-term and preterm infants has caused serious harm and many deaths among children born in Gaza in recent years.
We have not yet been able to resume Paola’s scientific work and are seeking partners who can help us continue our studies and publications.

We were pleased to receive the proposal to collaborate with the “A Common Land” project, which was born within the RUP, and to dedicate a further initiative to Paola Manduca to help female students in Gaza continue their university studies.
